Mote: Accessible Audio Feedback

 Mote: Accessible Audio Feedback

Providing feedback to students is essential but is often quite time-consuming and leaves many teachers wondering if students reviewed the feedback before moving ahead. While there are currently no technology tools that adjust the time and space continuum to improve the time spent grading activities, Mote is a helpful tool that can improve efficiency while providing learners with a more accessible form of feedback.

Mote is an extension for Google Chrome that allows the user to record audio voice notes as "comments" on Google productivity tools, such as Docs, Slides, and Sheets. The tool also provides a transcript of the audio file to provide additional options for representation.  Add the tool from the Chrome webstore in a matter of minutes, and off you go!  As a note, there are paid and free versions of the tool. The premium, paid version allows the user to translate transcriptions of any audio recording as well as lengthier recording times. However, the free version does allow for an unlimited number of recordings (shorter recording time, but you can add many to a file), transcriptions for every recording, and temporary access to the translation suite.

Why:

Audio, voice note feedback has been shown in several studies to boost student engagement and motivation in online learning environments and aligns with the Universal Design for Learning framework.

For example, the tool helps provide another means of representation for feedback that may be a more accessible option than text or written comments. Some students may prefer audio feedback as a way to comprehend the information rather than text. Furthermore, voice notes with transcriptions can support ELL students as they work to improve spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

VideoAnt can also support student engagement by providing a more personalized form of feedback to learners. In a remote environment, building teacher presence is vital, as it can feel as though it is a distant, isolating environment. Your voice can help remind students of your presence and investment in their learning. In one study, learners were more likely to implement audio feedback guidance rather than text feedback. Powerful results!
